When does baby sleep through the night?

Hi I am a Mom of a 14 week old bub. Have been putthing him on a loose routine. However bub doesn't seem to be able to sleep through the night. He keeps waking up at anywhere from 3-6am. When should I start weaning him the middle of the night feed? Have tried giving him water but he doesn't seem satisfied with it.

I find it difficult to put bub to sleep for a lengthy 3 hours after 7pm too. He keeps waking up after one hour or two before his last feed at 10:30pm. Do they automatically learn to sleep early evening at a certain age at all? I am a first time Mom so need some advice from everyone. Thanks!

One more thing - whenever bub has bowel movement he becomes fussy and always needs me to feed him a bit so that he can push the poo poo out - sometimes it's in between structured feeds, so end up messes up the routine. Is that normal?

My baby is 21 wks old and she started sleeping through the night during her 3rd month when I weaned her from BF to formula. Now, she is sleeping from 7-9pm then 10/11pm - 9pm. She is also in a loose routine except for her sleeping time at 10/11. I basically put my baby down in her crib 5 mins after feeding 6oz she tends to fall asleep, sometimes she cries but I just let her for a max 15mins. If she has gas, she burps as soon as she is carried up then I put her down again and she falls asleep.

I am a reader of Gina Ford book from Bumps to Babes.

Good luck Adriaticat! Hang in there, exhausting but just hug your baby and you'll feel the magical feeling and you'd feel better...

I breast feed 100%, but on a schedule

Baby started sleeping from 11pm- 6:30 am around 3 months.

It gets better. The important thing is that no one schedule will work for every baby, every baby is different. So you need to pay attention to your baby's needs and signals and structure something that works for both baby and you.

For example, you wrote you put baby to bed at 7, and ideally want to feed him next at 10:30 pm... well if baby wakes at 10pm for the feed, go ahead, feed him and then you can get yourself to bed earlier too.

Routine is great - we wake up and go to sleep the same time every day. Evening is bath, massage, bed... same time, every day.

If he cries, wait 5 minutes before going to him... next week wait 10... then 15... you'll be surprised that he can settle himself after a few minutes.

Good luck!!

Hi red82, I am a reader of Gina Ford too. And I find following the sleeping pattern that she advises is most difficult... I intend to breastfeed for as long as I can manage so I won't substitute the last feed with formula yet. Agree with Cara that sleeping for a length of 5 is considered have slept through the night, but bub wakes up closer to 3 or 4am instead of 5 or 6am.... and according to Gina, if he's gaining weight well he should be able to sleep through to 7am, so I feel unsure whether I should wean him the middle of the night feed yet.

14 weeks is early! i would work on getting him to sleep well from 7 to dream feed and then dreamfeed until close to 7am.

mine didn't do the above until almost 4 months and we did 7-7 from 7 months.

don't stress, just keep working on it and you'll be there!

Oh no no... I didn't expect bub to sleep through from 7-7 this early. I'm just wondering if it's realistic to have him sleep through from 11:30-7 at this age. Last night bub woke up at 5am, but after patting and a bit of cuddling, he sucked his fingers and drifted back to sleep until I woke him up at 7am. Already a great success.
