I feel like an idiot, but I can't hang a painting in my flat here in HK. The walls are poured concrete, and in spite of the fact that I have a masonry bit, I only get about a half inch or so into the wall when it doesn't go any further. This happens every time I drill, so I'm either incredibly unlucky and hitting rebar or something else I don't understand is going on. I have a somewhat heavy painting and some heavy sculpture to hang, and the little nail in hooks that Park and Shop sells that only go a fraction into the plaster won't hold. Can anyone advise me? I'd hate to hire a handiman just to do this--it seems like it ought to be simple enough but I'm flustered. Thanks!

Thank you, Mr. Rotavator...mine is a Black and Decker 10mm/400W Hammer Drill. That's not good enough? What is an SDS drill, please. Thanks!

I am pleased to report that although I have little knowledge of power tools, I did indeed put the drill setting on hammer. Sounds like I need a bigger--more powerful--drill? So...if I should get 'at least' an 800w hammer drill, should I more likely get something even MORE powerful (Tim Allen would approve, I'm sure!)...is this going to run off the wall socket electricity? Okay, I admit it--I DO know nothing about power tools. Thanks SO much for the advice, guys.

Now gentlemen, you're confusing the poor girl...
So, you're presenting two different possibilities?
1) A drill with an SDS chuck...what sort of wattage does it need? I get the idea that 800W is not necessary?
2) An 800W non-SDS drill...
I tried today to go to a nearby hardwear store--always a challenge to a non-Cantonese speaking woman--and get an 800W B & D/Bosch/Makita. They didn't have one...did have a 540W B & D...they said they'd get one in on Friday and sell it to me for $1690, which seemed very high...and they wanted to be paid in full now. I said no, of course, didn't even leave a downpayment, but supposedly they are going to get it Friday...any thoughts? I'm not thrilled with them, they kept pointing to the voltage when I was talking about the wattage...I could go elsewhere but this was at hand. Ridiculous price, or okay?
Thanks again! And...how do you feel about women with big power tools?

Perhaps focus more on the drill bit - I have a 550W hammer drill and can drill 3-4inch holes in our concrete walls. however, as soon as the drill bit wears it doesn't work well at all. perhaps just spend a few dollars on a couple of drill bits before paying all that money for a new drill?
