Rashes/Tiny Spots

Hi Moms and Dads,

My baby girl is 15 weeks old and she has started drooling a lot since the 14th week, and she has also discovered her hands and loves sucking them.

With the drooling and sucking the skin around her mouth is getting red and some tiny little spots have appeared. I have been trying to keep her skin dry by wiping with dry/damped clothes, and putting cream on the problem area afterwards; but so far I still couldn't get rid of the rashes and the spots. Do you have any suggestions?

Many thanks!

Try dabbing with a bit of extra virgin coconut oil.

I love aquaphor for this - it sort of "protects" from the rashes. Just wipe clean the drool and rub aquaphor on - and it's a shield for the skin.

Chrispy, try putting a thin layer of baby vaseline on bub's lips. Suggested by my wonderful paed - cheap but it really works, esp if you have a child like mine who is sensitive to many fragrance-containing moisturisers. Also I wipe bub's mouth with cool boiled water on cotton balls rather than using tap water. My girl, 17 months now, still get mouth rashes and I was told come kids will continue to have rashes till teething/drooling ends.

I have yet to find aqauphor in HK, but aquaphor is 50% vasoline anyway.

Also, keep in mind 'baby skin' actually means dry patches, spots, bumps, etc... it is all very normal!

my pediatrician and dematologist say best to just keep it clean, and moisturize. DO NOT do anything EXTRA b/c it looks BAD to you as the mother. It's normal in the first year for babies to have those rash around the mouth, especially when they start teething. It looks bad to us, but it gets worse b/c we keep "doing" things to fix it.

Best to just leave it. It's not infection or anything permanent. Just don't aggravate it by rubbing it, and putting a bunch of things on the skin.

well - one person I asked said she's never found aquaphor. The other told me that she got it from her dermatologist. Vaseline may just do the trick for you if you feel the need.

Thanks ladies. Now whenever baby sleeps I wipe her skin with boiled water then apply a thin layer of vaseline on the problem area, and so far it seems it's working well.

Thanks!

Just to reiterate, Crispy, do NOT put a thick layer of vaseline on skin as I called up the pharmacist and he said too thick a layer would prevent bub's skin from being able to breathe and might aggravate problem even, which is exactly what happened to my bub. Totally agree with katetam that less is more!

Hi I used vaseline for my boy, he drooled so bad till he was about 11 months old when his first teeth finally came through!! Seems to be better now.

Also because he liked to sleep on side or tummy his drool would make one side of his face red and sore so I put it on at night to prevent rashes. It works well.
