My 15 weeks old baby has started sucking her thumb. Hubby thinks I should offer her a pacifier as he thinks sucking a dummy is better than sucking a finger. I am NOT in agreement with him and I am NOT a fan of using pacifiers.
It will be great if you can share your view on this. Many thanks!

mine hated the dummy...and when he found his thumb, it was a huge relief - self-soothing!
i am not too worried for our case as he only does it as he falls asleep. he doesn't have his thumb in his mouth all day or when he is sleeping.

Unfortunately mine loves her dummy! Sometimes I wish she would use her thumb so I am not up in the night looking for her dummy to plug her back in! I suppose the only good thing is you can take a dummy away but not a thumb!

I've noticed my baby likes to suck her thumb when she falls asleep too, but not when she's sleeping. But during the day from time to time she likes to suck her thumb or a finger or somtimes her entire fist! She doesn't do it all the time though, so I guess I should just let her suck her thumb?

hi chrispy,
how are you? our babies are almost the same age. Mine also has this issue, if i remove it from his mouth, he gets upset, so i just let it be and wipes his hands often. He doesn't like pacifier.

Hi Honeypie! My baby girl was born on Oct-3, what about yours? I am doing fine, am taking a year off work to spend time with my baby and I am enjoying every minute of it. How are you? How's your baby? Mine is quite a big baby, at 15 weeks she's already 68cm!\O/
Yes I think I will just let her suck her thumb/hand, I really don't want to introduce pacificer unless I really have to.
By the way which baby face cream/lotion do you use? Mine has sensitive skin and cannot use Mustella products at all.

I think dummies are great for little babies that seem to need to suck all the time as mine did.
I let both of my children have dummies up until it became an issue and I was up during the night to pop them back in.
From memory, which is vague these days - I took my son's dummy away at 6 months and my daughter at about 14 months - it took one night of crying to sleep and then the kids went without.

Hi Chrispy, thanks for opening this thread! I have the same question as you do! My baby is around 14 weeks old (yours, mine and honeypie's are all Oct babies) He loves both fist/ fingers/ dummy. Honestly it's a big relief he now learns to suck his fingers which means I don't always have to put a dummy in his mouth whenever he needs to soothe himself. I am also not a fan of dummies (hubby is) but baby seems enjoy it esp if he's awakenened in the middle of a nap. Some friends told me to let him suck both fingers/ dummies so he won't be addicted to any single kind. My pediatrician says babies have strong suckling need before 1 year old, and if the need is well satisfied he will outgrow the need after 1 year of age. Otherwise he may have to stick with his dummy until 3 or older. So I guess, better let him suck?
It's harder to wean him from sucking his fingers than a dummy though... and I wonder which one of these would affect teeth development.

dummies can fall out and get lost...
fingers, thumbs and hands cannot...
That pretty much sums it up! :)

The one thing I will mention is my friends child who sucks his fingers is now having trouble with his teeth - the dentist they went to did say that is why he prefers parents to give a dummy.

Hi Chrispy,
Mine was born October 7, just went to see the pedia today bec of the rashes(she said not a nappy rash) so i know his height accurately...at 16 weeks is 63.6. So your is bigger, i'm asian by the way. What's her weight? mine is 7.1.
I'm not into cream/lotion, as i've said, i didn't even know we have to put nappy rash cream. I am using coconut oil in his cradle cap and sometimes in his eyebrow if it's flaky, if i'm not lazy, i put Khiels in his face, but not much. For the drooling, pedia said i can put vaseline, though he still has no rashes yet on his chin.
Nicher, i sent you an email last week, wonder if you got it.
Until when do you plan to BF? i read chrispy is til 6 months only, why 6 months? i'm still thinking when to stop it.

Hi Honeypie,
My girl was 7.06kg when we weighted her 2 weeks ago. I guess she's long but not too chubby. I am Canadian Chinese and hubby is English.
I know most doctors recommend breastfeeding for one year but I have decided to do it for 6 months (as by 6 months solid can be introduced). I do enjoy breastfeeding but I find it hard to do my own things as boobs get full every 4 hours and it's painful if I don't feed or express; so when I need to be away from baby or from home I have this 4-hour time limit.
Sounds like it's 50/50 on Dummy VS Thumb...hmmm..

My 2-year old boy got into the habit of sucking his thumb when he was a four-month old baby. I wanted to do something about it when he turned one but hubby felt that it was not much of a problem (have to admit - it was not, at that point in time - mainly to fall asleep) and hence did not require any drastic action to be taken. But I regret that now since I am finding it very difficult to get him to kick the habit. Coaxing does not work at this age since they are too young. Nor does the use of band-aid/gloves since they are old enough to know how to peel them off on their own!!
As mentioned in some of the posts above, you can always take away a pacifier but not their digit(s)!!

Hi honeypie - didn't get your email...maybe you'd like to pm me instead?
Just went for a check up with baby today. He weighs 6.46kg and 62cm. Not too big. Just average. I plan to breastfeed for as long as I can manage. I'll start working in March and by that time he reaches 4 months. Will keep expressing and hope to maintain this bonding to 1 year old. I love breastfeeding (and I actually find it convenient)

hi nicher,
your baby is tall. almost same as my baby's height but mine is 2 weeks ahead. i'll PM you.
i plan to bf either 6 or 9 months,i love the bonding and convenience, but like chrispy said, i i can only go out for 3 hours as he will feed again (you're luckier chrispy for 4 hours), i'm not successful with pumping so i have to be with baby all the time.

Just want to share my experience...
All my 3 children sucked their thumb :) The first one sucked her right thumb, the second one sucked left or right thumb, and the last one sucked her left thumb.
I too was worried. I tried to give them the dummy, but they spitted it out. So I just let time take the course :P
I started to panic when I saw the upper front teeth of my first child protruding and a gap on the lower front teeth of my second child. They're only 14 months apart that's why I could these happening at the same time.
My eldest on was 4 then. She's big enough to understand things so I talked to her about the side effects of thumb-sucking like 'ugly' thumb and teeth :P and to my surprise..... that same evening, while I was reading her the bedtime stories, she STOPPED sucking her thumb :D After that I still found her unconciously sucking her thumb in her sleep, I just gently pulled it out..... and thank God.... she stopped from that day.
In the meantime, she kept on reminding her sister (who's 3 then) not to suck her thumb whenever she saw her doing it, thus.... 2 birds in one stone, my second one also stopped shortly after that :D
I consider myself lucky :D so when I know the third one also sucked her thumb, I don't want to take any risk. When she's 2 1/2, I used Bite-X (a very bitter solution) I bought from Watson's on her. I felt soooooo bad doing this. It hurt to see her face all wrinkled up when she tried to suck her thumb. She cried. She sucked other fingers, I put Bite-X on those fingers too. There was a point where I put Bite-X on all 10 fingers :P She stopped sucking her thumb in about 2 weeks time.
If you decide to use Bite-X, please be careful. It's VERY VERY bitter, so just put a thin dab. And REMEMBER to wash his/her hand after he/she wakes up because those little hands will start touching things (foods among on of them) and putting things in their mouth.... and poor little thing, they are all bitter :P
My two cents: don't worry too much. Your baby is only 3 mths old. That's how she comfort herself. Don't you just love looking at her falling asleep while sucking her thumb? :P

With my eldest, I gave him a dummy for 3 months then took it away when someone advised against it. Didn't have any problems with it. With my second baby now, I tried giving him a dummy in the early days but he kept spitting it out, so I gave up. He's now 5 1/2 months and for the past 1 1/2 months, he's been sucking his thumb to go to sleep. Yes Micchira, it is really sweet watching him fall asleep like that. As everyone says, it's self-soothing and at the moment, I do not wish to stop it. I will probably start worrying when he gets to the crawling stage but I guess I'll make sure his hands are washed before bedtime.
