hi all, i need some advice urgently. iin trying to save money, i got a 2nd hand dishwasher and its a built in model. It was delivered today BUT the space in my apt is 1 cm too narrow (it wont go in, 1cm is just 1 cm too freaking big).
i thought I had measured it right!!! now i'm told that if i just use it as a standing piece the plates will move and break. It needs to be weighted apparently.
I'm thinking MAYBE i can get a carpenter to built a cabinet/ box to house it so that it wont move/rattle? it will probably be put in the maids room/spare room. my question - is this ideal practical/ feasible or just silly.
any suggestions really welcome at this stage.

It might just be cheaper and easier to sell it on AsiaXPat.
And get a smaller one or a free-standing one.

i got it at 2500hkd for a siemens 12 piece setting (which was a great deal) and its sitting at home mocking me. i might have to but i feel i should do something. feeling extremely helpless in hk right now.

It will cost you a lot to built a cabinet around it. I know as I am trying to get some wooden one at the moment and prices are just crazy, over 1500 for a 90 cm X 70 cm !!

shoot. ok. is there anyway i can secure/weight it. Since I cant get it 'built-in', i need to just wedge it in between so that it wont move/shake when washing. or some way to bolt it shut.
I'm moving away from the cabinent idea now. sigh this is so not worth the savings.

Per the generic installation manual, the builtin model does need cabinet enclosure and also drainage pipe to be 20" or about 50cm abovethe floor.
Contact HK Seimens and ask for their advice. See whether the contact below works.

This is just a thought ... Ikea sell kitchen units ... you could check to see if they supply housing units for dishwashers in their kitchen department ... if it's going in the maids/spare room then you could go for the cheapest one that they have ... if they have them!

Whichever location that you want to relocate the dishwasher, consider the where disherwasher water will be draining into ??

hi all, here's the update. i called Siemens today and sorta explained my situation. They said if the spareparts (metallic lid) can be ordered from germany I can convert my built in (which has the top shaved off) to a free standing.
problem right now : more likely unavailable and if it is will take about 2mths.. better than nothing.
so fingers crossed. I'm going to put it in the maid's room which has a shower - so the water in/out will come from there.
I have definitely learnt a lesson. Sometimes its just easier to buy. I think the part will cost 1500hkd and thats about 4000. I can get a new one for that price.
for you guys out that, u can learn from me...

Sell it - you are going to add costs with the alterations and the piping installations, etc...
We almost bought a second hand dishwasher from an individual, and then worried about installation.
So instead, we bought from Kingsway (in Aberdeen, second hand appliance shop) and had them include installation and a 6 month guarantee.

Of course we paid for the installation, but figured they had a cheaper handyman than we did and the guarantee then also covered the handyman work too.
We have bought different things from them over the years - be sure to bargain the price!

hi sarah, you're right , the handyman said he could shave off 1cm to fit the dishwasher. Our current space houses the washing machine was is 59cm. I didnt want to as I was so afraid that it was a typical hk solution. they do first, worry later. have had bad experience with so-called quick hk fixes.
long story short : my husband agrees that its not worth it buying the spare-parts and we are going to get a brand new piece.
we've persuaded our landlord to take it and install it in her other units for rent as she's refurbishing her other places.
