Well, I guess I am depressed, frankly, I don't know if I am....but yeah, I am bored to death now. I came here in 2004, on dependents visa....well, in May 2006, dependents visa holders got permission to work...but things just don't seem fine. I have sent like 1000 applications, but no reply, no acknowledgment of anything. I am loosing hope now. Please tell me what to do,....cant even start something of my own, no money for that. Please, can someone help!!!

You have not been in any employment for min. 3 years, right? If correct it is difficult to be considered, depending on your profession etc.... What sort of "job" are you looking for?

are you native english speaker? there're always job openings at language centers to teach english.

...or can you describe yourself and your skills?

I am not looking for some highly paid job, just the admin kind of thing. I am a commerce graduate and MBA. I am not a native English Speaker. I am an Indian.

Helenahk,

Are you interested in doing volunteer work? Depending on what you're passionate about, there are lots of organizations who can benefit from your time and effort. Also, this is a good way to network, learn a new skill, and maybe even land a job. I know of someone who met her employer while volunteering..

Mercury_element,

In between finding a job, why not brush up on your skills, or learn a new one. Study a language perhaps? Polish your resume (there are some good tips on Yahoo Jobs) and interviewing skills.

Sometimes what matters more than what we know is how we present and market ourselves and how we can create the right perception about ourselves. Good luck!

mercury_element,

we seem to be sailing in the same boat.. I worked for eight years in the banking sector before coming to HK. Took time off to start a family and have been away from the job scene for more than 3 years now. I have not been actively looking out for a job. Nonetheless, on the few occasions that I did send out my resume, there was no response, whatsoever. I have been told that in HK networking/contacts matter when it comes to clinching jobs.

This could be apocryphal, but women I know who work in all sorts of offices have told me their HR dept staff routinely bin applications from non-locals for admin-type jobs. I would suspect there is a grain of truth in this as in my experience it is very difficult - no, make that virtually impossible! - to get a foot in the door for interview without speaking Cantonese or having half the alphabet in letters after my name (even though neither would be necessary for the role). Happens all over the world so it's not only Hong Kong folk who protect their jobs, but it's a pain as, like you, I really could do with finding employment here. Would be good if there was some way to bypass the politics other than frantic networking.

Helenahk,

Here's a listing of the various organizations where you can volunteer. It's my personal opinion, but it's best to find a cause that you are passionate about--pets, environment, health..
