We are thinking of taking the kids to shenzhen for the Monday and Tuesday of Chinese New Year. Does anyone know if things will be open, like the theme parks etc

not a good idea, that is one of the most busy (and crazy) period at the hkg/china border.

I agree, you'll probably be stuck at the border for hourrs in the immigration lines.

Everything is open, especially the entertainment sectors.. Yes Crime activities are at its peak.. But again, pickpocketers are year round employment in China, so nothing new. Just be careful and be aware of your surroundings... Other than those negative thoughts, just think why is the border so crowd, that is because over 1/4 of the Hong Kong residences are going across the border for a good time/hoilday get away... So you are not alone....
