My wife and I will be moving to Hong Kong and we have been checking rental properties on the web. We see the asking price but have no idea how negotiable it can be. Is there a percentage that is viewed as expected in negotiated reductions?

Also, take the advice of the property agent which has the listing. Agents usually know whether the landlord is prepared to negotiate or not. But beware - most adverts on websites are out of date or not real. A lot of property agents list the landlord's "bottom price" as the asking rental, which in effect means there's no negotiation at all. And a lot of them also leave listings on websites a long time after the property has been leased, just to attract new clients.

Patrick, I agree it's not always the case. I'm an agent myself and I know the frustration of owners not keeping us informed, but as I said, there are a lot of unscrupulous agents who will advertise properties which are no longer available, because they look like a good deal and will attract clients.
