One Dr. has recommended that our 3 children (twins age 3, and a 15 month old) have the series of pre-exposure rabies vaccinations (3 shots in 28 days)before moving to Shanghai. Has anyone done this? We have looked at several web sites (including CDC) and they do not seem to generally recommend it unless working with animals, etc. Are there a lot of stray dogs in Shanghai? We will be living in Pudong area.
Thanks.

Absolutely not! This shows a measure of ignorance on the part of the doctor. Firstly, the injections are not pleasant, but that is secondary. More importantly, pre-exposure vaccinations are recommended IFG you are going to an area where rabies is prevalent (and China is such a place) AND you are not going to be near a doctor who has access to rabies vaccination. The pre-exposure vaccination is for people who need to trek 3 days to see such a doctor, and for whom, by then, the vaccination is too late.
