Where/What to buy - childrens watch?

ORIGINAL POST

My daughter has now reached an age where she wants a watch and would like one for her birthday.

She can just about read a clock face so I don't want to buy a digital watch which takes away the learning. I'm prepared to spend up to $600 so it will last a good few years so nothing nothing too babyish/girly and be waterproof so she can wear it swimming.

Can anyone help me out to what I should be looking at? I need to buy it before Feb 25.

We went to Swatch (opposite Sogo) and got the small size. The children never take them off (including swimming)!

You didn't say how old she is, but is it realistic to expect her to keep a watch for a few years at this age?

Maybe start with something inexpensive for her birthday, and see how she likes wearing one... and if it works well then buy an 'upgrade' to a Swatch... That could be her Holiday gift in December, and she could come help choose... so she has an inspiration to take care of this one for the next 10 months?

She will be 10years old at her next birthday so feel she is responsible enough to look after a decent watch. Someone mentioned Baby G watches - dont know anything about them.

Aaaah - much older than I thought from the original post! Agree a nicer watch would be appreciated at that more responsible age :)

When I looked at the Baby G watches they were all digital, chunkier plastic type sports watches and I think they are made by casio. You could try the casio, SWATCH, citizen or seiko websites and see if they have anything that might suit. You might also find that rip curl, billabong etc do children's watches.

Thanks everyone for all your help. Will look at Swatch. I dont want Baby G if they are digital. Since daughter is a bit of a surfer she may like anything done by rip curl or billabong. I'll look at their websites and see if I can track anything down in Hong Kong.

Both my daughters were 4 when they received their first proper watch and we, rather my parents, bought them a Flik and Flak watch from Swatch. They love them and so robust!

Go to City Chain (I think that is name). They have many many differnt types of watches and are within your budget. My daughter is almost 8. I bought her a sports looking one from Wanchai market for $20. Cannot really tell it is cheap and works just fine. Guess when she gets older then maybe an upgrade. But $600 is quite a bit.
