i just found out that our bub has eczema. i had it when I was a child and I feel so bad about giving it to her... Well, it doesn't help to feel sorry, but i want to do everything to avoid making it worse. We have two dogs and I found out when I touch the rug where dogs are, I get itchy. And I learned animals can triger or worsen eczema. I feel very bad about it but I want to find a family who can keep our dogs. Does anyone know how to find a family? I don't want to put them down.

Try the NAET treatments. That combined with Neem Oil and the tea from the leaf and my bubs is completely cleared. Its amazing! I'm still careful about his food and such, but he had a severe dust allergy, and we just treated him for it.

Read about NAET here, it works:

http://www.naet.com/

He has gone from a dry, red itching, oozing baby (head to foot, behind ears, knees etc etc) to a nice smooth baby soft bubs!

I still only use QV or aqueous cream to bathe him. NO products at all.

Its NEEM. Have a read:

http://www.healthywaymagazine.com/issue23/10_neem_eczema.html

I got sent a lot of leaves which we boil in water and then use to bathe baby in everyday. I also use cotton in neem water as wet wipes.

I bought a gallon of the neem seed oil on the internet from here:

http://www.neemking.com/

It bloody stinks but does a FANTASTIC job. Overnight.

Hi Mints,

NAET is expensive, but I believe it is a cure rather than a treatment. As such its going to save me HEAPS of money long term in doctors and medical costs, not to mention emotional trauma. My bubs has got 100% better on zero medication.

Steroids are an absolute disaster. They suppress the immune system so that bubs was prey to opportunistic bacteria when he scratched himself and on two occasions got cellulitus (which can be fatal if left untreated) and had to have antibiotics.

I have done all the basic NAET treatments - 15 of them at 250 bucks per treatment and have just treated bubs for a severe dust allergy, which he now seems to have kicked. That in combination with the Neem treatment and I now have a non-itchy bubbs and all of us are soooooo much happier and relieved!

Its expensive, but worth it.

If you want to meet me in Wanchai I can give you a small sasa bottle of neem oil to try. You have to mix it with QV or aqueous cream. And stop ALL soap/washing liquid or any other product touching your baby. We also do not use detergent on his clothes. We put his clothes in the washing machine and give it a thorough wash in plain hot water, then boil it for 20 minutes in plain water on the stove. No chemicals. He started showing improvement after these steps, but that improvement was speeded up exponentially with the neem.

Hiya Susi,

My bubbs had it from head to foot, behind his years, knees, arms, under his chin. His skin was highly inflamed, hot to touch, and oozing. He was scratching himself all over and bleeding from it, and he was getting infections.

He wasnt able to sleep properly (which is not good for growth) and eat properly. He had it really badly from 3 months, esp. after a bout of antibiotics, which kicked off a yeast allergy. Although they say that its infantile, I know plenty of my friends who have 12 year old kids with severe eczema. I was not willing to take the chance. QV did not work much... i tried it all, antihistamine mixture administered orally, steroid cream, QV etc etc etc

firsttimemom, I am glad to hear that your bub has recovered from bad eczema. Thank you for your info on NEEM. I will read up on it and may try. Does it work as a prevention of eczema episodes? My bub was treated with very mild steroid and after two days, she looks better. But I don't want to keep on using steroid as you well know it may get into a bad cycle.

Susi, thanks for your comforting words. My husband says the same thing. It maybe just a mild case and don't imagine the worst (I normally worry the worst case in everything especially because I myself had it and my friend had twins who had very bad eczema that they could not lead a normal life for 5-6years as they could not sleep with itchy skin!!!) But you are right, it maybe just a infantile eczema and nothing serious...

Mints, I hope your bub will be better soon, too. Let's keep on exchanging info on treatment on this thread.

Hello,

Sorry for my ignorance, but how do i know if baby has eczema? my baby has rashes on the cheek but after aqueous, it was OK, the only concern now is the rash in his chest, pedia said it's from saliva drooling.

Thanks.

We have found only to way to stop eczema on her daughter: chinese doctor.

Ours is in Tai Po market.

Cheap, safe, it works in 2 days.

Before we have waste our money in doctors, cream, medicine.

honeypie,

It is very hard to tell if the rash is eczema. When I first took my daughter to a doctor in Japan when the rash was not so bad and only around her chin, he said it is from saliva and dryness. Then it developed into more red, bumpy spots with scaling skin, some part looked as if she got some chemical peeling! Then Dr Thondup told me she's got eczema. I don'T think you should worry about eczema at this point. Keep an eye on his condition and if it gets worse, ask the doctor again.

MM and Honeypie, dont wait till it spreads. My story is pretty much the same as MMs. My bubbs also initially started with only his cheeks and chin, I thought it was a milk rash. I was in denial, cause no one in my family has eczema. Then it went to his shoulders. Then slowly to his sides, thighs, and before I even knew it he was covered head to foot and in great distress.

My advice is try to control the small area asap with Neem ASAP before it spreads and becomes severe like my poor bubba. If I hadn't been in denial and did proper research before it got so bad, I might have saved all of us some sleepless nights and two cases of cellulitus.

The docs call eczema atopic dermatitis and lots of other nice euphemisms.

hi MM & FTM,

oh my gosh, it looks like the same symptom, around the cheek, chin, it was gone, but there are about 3-4 patches in his upper chest, scaling like, on and off, so i thought it is just from drooling saliva. My baby is 4 months now, so must be around that age when your baby started it, i had asthma, family had that history, i read that eczema is skin asthma too. I put aqueous on it but it doesn't improve at all. What should i do? NEEM - where to get it asap? i'm travelling on friday, with no helper now. thanks.

absolutely MM

I'm on holiday from saturday for two weeks, so if you and Honeypie want to swing by tomorrow (thurs) evening, about 6 to 6:15, that will be fine. Bring a sasa plastic bottle...

And gear your nasal passages up for a major assault. I tell myself that it smells so bad because its chock full of good protective chemicals that work... LOL

Macron - How old is your baby? I read somewhere that until a certain age, they're not allergic to an animal...? I have to re-read this because it was the first time I had heard it; in a book by a good doctor.

What's your rug made out of? Have you tried to vaccuum often? Some people are only allergic to the dander...which is in the saliva.

Anyway, just some ideas to try before you give up your dogs. I had eczema when I was little, and my parents would never get me a dog. Then I got one when I was ten, and was absolutely fine. Some dogs bother me now, but others not at all. What bothers me more are certain kinds of fiber/materials, cats, certain changes in air quality or temperature, etc.. Maybe your baby is reacting to something else?

It's late now so I haven't read through all of these posts super throughly, so please excuse me if I'm off the points somewhere.

BTW, there are some threads on xpat with some good advice on controlling eczema. Hope they help.

RiceT, Thank for your advice. My bub is 6months old. We vacuum clean the rug often with a special vacuum cleaner by Millea. Allergy is about accumulating toxin in the body, and the earlier you get rid of the cause/allergens, the better. We have to confine the dogs in the small area if we were to keep them, and if they are adopted to a home where they have more freedome, they would be happier.

I am also thinking about getting organic cotton baby wear. Does anyone know where to get them?

Hi FTM,

You are my angel, maybe we're connected somehow in our pastlives ;-) (if you believe in that) You've been a big help from the time i got preggy, choosing OB, diapers, and now letting me know about this eczema and giving me the oil.

6-6:15 where? in your house? i can't go out alone, it must be with baby but we're on Gina ford routine, next BF time is 6pm. Sleep time at 7pm. I'm travelling tomorrow night, is it possible to get it in your house during daytime, like 4pm tomorrow? If not, then can i go at night time tonight (thurs), i have to wait til my husband comes home. Thanks so much, if this schedule doesn't work well, it's okay, no problem i'll try to arrange another time that is convenient for you.

Macaron - I hear you on the dogs. I think there's a pets section on this website too. May be of help.

Also, could you recommend some good books/websites/literature on the theory of allergies being all about toxin accumulation? I've heard various theories, one being that the body is exposed to something early on, identifies it as a problem, and then attacks it when it is reintroduced...i.e. nothing about build up, but just more of a memory/programming. Interested to read more about the accumulation idea. My sister-in-law believes that eczema is a build up of candida; she is very into homeopathic remedies and the like and may have gotten it from there.

Thank you so much FTM! I hope this will be the answer for her. I first need to ask Dr.Thondup when I can start the therapy, so it may be a while before I give you a feedback, but having seen your baby with nice skin, I cannot wait to try! I really appreciate your generousity.

RicT, sorry I don't have any recommendation for books...Doctors in Japan have told me on several occasions that it is about accumulation of toxin or allergen (may mean accumulation of time of exposure) and it kind of got stuck on my mind. I will let you know if I find any literature on this.

I have a dog, a Labrador. My two babies (had eczema, quite badly in their first year). I personally have had eczema all my life.

There are TONS of theories about HOW to help Eczema, and tons of opinions and beliefs about what will trigger eczema and what helps it....

I can only tell you what I know and what has worked for me.

my two kids have NO eczema right now, they are 3 and 1, and occasionally, they will break out a little rash on their cheeks... but I always know the reason. I get rashes when I am stressed and lack of sleep and rest.

Anyways- regarding your dog..... it's easy to find out, put your dog in a kennel for 3 days.... it's not that bad, find a good one, and vacuum your carpet with your baby away from it. Then see if baby's rashes get better by the third day.... I would suggest 1 week if possible. Then you will know whether the dogs are triggering it.

my mom hates my dog, she always say any illness or "problems" my kids have, she will say the dog is guilty.

My two pediatricians and dermatologists says, it's POSSIBLE but unlikely especially when your baby is so young still... it's rare, but possible.

One thing I found very helpful was the air purifiers b/c it reduces pet Dander... which is what is possible in causing allergies in your kids, skin or respiratory problems. Eczema and Asthma go hand in hand.

Just want to remind you, in the FIRST YEAR of many babies, eczema is just PART of the normal development.... don't do anything to it just b/c it looks ugly.... keep baby's skin moist, and clean.... by 1 year old, if he/she still has these rashes, then start to worry.

My two kids ( touch wood)... both have beautiful skin b/c I use Bioderma's products instead of Mustela now, and a great dermatologist..... basically, the medication from my dermatologist and advice was, don't do anything and it will heal and be gone by 1 year old. If you start putting stuff on, and feeding your baby stuff for better skin and curing the "eczema" ... my dermatologist said, the "problem" will stick after 1 year old instead of going away.

He's proven right and accurate after TWO babies.

Hope this helps.

I read other threads on eczema and there are many tips I want to try...but one thing at a time. Thank you very much all for great advice. Oh, one more question...how do we get rid of clorine in the water?

Please support our advertisers:
Katia2007 19 yrs ago
Apart from animals, many chemicals in products such as soaps and shampoos cause eczema. I can send an list in english if you're interested. But to be on the safe side an excellent company that delivers and has partners worldwide is Beauty and the Bees. Visit www.beebeauty.com

Another totally safe company, but not chemical free is Neways International.

RiceT 19 yrs ago
Katia - Could you share that list with me...either PM or here? Thanks.

Macron - We have water filters in our showers and kitchen that seem to help A LOT, even with the chlorine. Bought them at Water Galaxy in WanChai. Also bought one in Fortress but it broke rather quickly; that one was produced by Mitzubishi (sp?).

It was reported in the Australian Medical Journal recently that they believe one of the main causes of child asthma increasing dramatically over the past few years is directly linked with chlorine but more so to the fact that australians are obsessed with back yard swimming pools, hence the volume of chlorine being used on a daily basis.

Sorry to butt in this eczema thread but someone mentioned that eczema & asthma go hand in hand.

Thanks RiceT and wired. I also heard that you can use vitamin C to get rid of chlorine. Will investigate more and will let you guys know if interested. Also heard that swimming in a clean sea water is good? I have to study more about that too...

RiceT 19 yrs ago
Swimming in the salt water is great, at least that's what we've found. Of course it may sting a little on any open cuts, etc., but sun and sea seem to heal. Chlorine seems to aggravate; we stay away from it. LOVE salt-water pools.

Macaron - eating Vitamin C may work OR putting it in a filter? Curious.

Eczema, asthma, and hay fever are said to be somehow related...but are not necessarily experienced by the same person. They do say to be on the look out for any one of these if someone else in your family has any one of these....i.e. if a family member has hay fever or other allergies, it's conceivable that someone else in your family could have eczema. It's also not limited to families with already existing occurences though, since now it seems science is presenting more and more data on how allergies can be introduced into an individual without any family history of allergies.

Please support our advertisers:
macaron mania 19 yrs ago
RiceT, we will defnitely try sea water.

Vitamin C- you can put it in water in the bath or buy a vitamin-c shower filter head.
