If you live in a village house around Tai Po, would you also need to have a car to get around. How long does it take to get to Central in the mornings?

no, you don't need a car in most cases, the villages are mostly well served by the green mini bus.
depending on the proximity of the village to the nearest bus stop or KCR train station, it can be long, can be short. approximately one hour to central during peak hours.

Because of high mortage interest rates, it is not a good time to buy property. Depending on how much you borrow, you might end up paying A LOT more than half a million HK$ in interest alone.

U can also try South Lantau Island. Very affordable compared to HK Island, Sai Kung and Clearwater Bay. Very conveinant with the ferry (Approximately 25 minutes to Central) or drive in which takes approximately 45 minutes. You can also take the MTR from Tung Chung which takes about 30 minutes into Central. Very nice environment, very close to beautiful beaches and hiking trails and the air is much cleaner. They are currently building a new road which will be finished by 2008 and will then put the property prices up sky high. Great investment opportunity and lovley place to live. Good luck.
