for the 5 month old, a car seat is the safest option. For your 3.5 year old, check this thread which compares the different 'harnesses' which are good for taxis: http://hongkong.asiaxpat.com/forums/momsdads/threads/89782.asp

My children are similar to you.
Both of our car seat were big (not cosy), so I never used them in taxi and bus.
We had not planned to have one car, so I don't bring the car seat. Now we have one, and I has obliged to buy new seats.
One advise: if you have space: take them.
Last thing, some car seats are avalaible in planes (cosy seat). The cot given in plane for baby is available for children under 8 months, after you can buy a seat for him/her and used you car seat!

Green - that sort of car seat is exaclty what we used for hte first year, and it is great because it works with a seatbelt or the car seat base in our car.
Graco is one of the ones that fits into the 'frame' stroller - very handy, two friends had this and I was a bit jealous as it got heavy to carry the car seat and the baby!
Now that he is one year, we use the joeysafe, but will use the car seat for the newborn.
