young babies with colds

My 11 week old baby has a snuffly cold and woke up this morning finding it really hard to breathe and mucus in her mouth .. it was a real fright to see her like that. Held her upright, held her in the bathroom with hot water running (steam)and she started to cough it out and quickly get better. We took her to the paed. this morning and he said just a mild cold and she was fine. Gave us saline drops for her nose. But I was surprised that such a young baby would get a cold. I am BFing too. Does anyone have experience of young babies with colds or advice about what best to do to ease their discomfort ? Thanks.

Saline drops up the nose are brilliant - a few drops before each breast feed.

Try to hold her upright when you can.

She will be over it in no time!

her cold will be shorter thanks to your breastmilk. Also possible that she fought it off longer thanks to the breast milk.

Vicks baby balm is very good - and just regular vicks, I put on handkerchiefs and tie it around her crib - and that causes a mild vapor action, making it easier for babies to breathe.

Its very normal for a young baby to get a cold. My first got her first cold at around 4 months and i freaked of course and rushed her to the doctor. She was fine and all She nursed during that time which helped tons. Babies get colds just like us and breast feeding doesnt prevent everything just helps.

My baby slept in the moses basket in his cot - I propped it up with pillows so that it was easier for him to breathe. Sakine drops also helped a lot. I also had a burner in his room - eucalyptus worked well.

It is quite feasible that such young babies can get colds even when they are breast feeding.

However by continously breast feeding your baby you are doing the best thing for little one ,as we know that breast milk contains a power house of antibacteria and antivirial factors and will help her get better much quicker.

Yur paediatrician has given you saline drops to put up the babies nostrils to help loosen the nasal congestion which is very helpful . I would also suggest frequent breast feeds to keep her well hydrated and keeping the baby in the your bedroom at night so you can quickly respond to her if she gets snuffily.

I hope you little one gets better soon
