Our bubs has been taking solids for 3 weeks now and last week we gave him some pureed carrots with rice cereal (3 days only). Noticed that he poo-ed 3 times a day each of little amount, the 1st one harder, 2nd one softer and the last one even softer with carrots in it. Does that mean he cannot stomach cannot digest carrots properly.
We also give him some pureed fruit around 6pm as he does not like water despite many times trying to get him to drink water. The reason is since eating cereal his poo is not as soft as it was when he was on formula milk only.
Just worried that he will his poo will get harder due to lack of water or on the runs if the food he takes cannot be digested properly. So far we have given him avocadoes, pears, apples, bananas, carrots and sweet potatoes - no allergies so far. We are thinking of giving him congee which might help with the poo???
Would appreciate some advice.

have you switched to stage 2 formula lately aswell? that can produce harder poo because of the higher iron content

we had a funnier thread on this a while back - I think Wheelymate started it - asking if what went in, looked like what came out. We discussed how bananas, sweet potatoes (especially this one for some reason) looked the same in and out. This does not mean it's a problem for the digestion.
If you're worried about the poo factor, prunes are a way to go. From my understanding about breastfeeding and formula feeding, their water/liquid needs are being met. (especially if they have 4-5 good wet diapers a day.) so I wouldn't worry about that aspect. Instead of the poos are a bit harder, try prunes. The water at this stage is more to teach them how to like water, and so as they get more advanced in their solids, they can take more.
Good luck!

We are giving him the Beanstalk formula milk which is from birth to 9mths and then will change to the next stage up from 9mths onwards.
hkchoichoi - how do I use the prunes - do I steam the dried ones, puree it and add it to the rice cereal or eat on its own or do I add the concentrated prune juice (Del Monte) to the rice cereal or drink on it own. Think the juice is very sweet hence may need to add water to dilute it abit.

you can dilute the juice with water and give to him.
I used to boil prunes and puree and mix with the rice cereal. Anytime I gave banana (which some say constipate) I would also offer prunes.
There are those experts who say fruit before dinner is not the way to go as it may stimulate bowels in the night and wake baby up with a poopy mess in the middle of the night.

Thanks hkchoichoi. Will bear in mind the time of giving fruit.

bbvv,
what goes in will sometimes come out looking the same at the other end :) the little banana worms, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, brown rice, sweet corn... bleah and stinky too!!
prunes will help - stew it and then freeze them in little ice cubes. then when you feed cereal, pop one cube in...makes the cereal sweeter and more palatable for baby too!
I think I read before that apples might constipate a baby but apple juice can help with softer poo...
I don't feed fruits after dinner because I worry about baby waking up at night for poo!

oh! pear puree is also good to soften poo!

Thanks Wheelymate. Fruits in the afternoon as a snack then. I am still in the testing stage but so happy that my bubs loves the food I put in his mouth. He is like a bird when we put the spoon nears him and certainly knows when he is full as he shuts his mouth real tight...hee hee.

bbvv,
my little one (he's 7 months old, by the way - how old is yours?) seems to be behaving exactly like yours. When it is something he likes his mouth will be wide open and the food needs to keep going in quickly. But once he is done, he clamps his mouth shut (no risk of overfeeding, there, huh!!).
As regards constipation, he used to go for 4 to 5 days without a bowel movement when he was exclusively breastfed but now that he is on solids too, he is more or less okay on that front. Anyway, here is what I do and what works for him...
rinse raisins (organic, preferably) in tepid water and leave them to soak in water for a few hours. Drain raisins in a seive and feed the baby the liquid. Pear puree is also supposedly good although I have never used it, so far.

Hi addis, mine's almost 6 months and 3 weeks old. I love feeding him as he eats everything we give him at the moment - hope he doesn't get fussy - hear that this may happen when he starts teething. Thanks for the advice.
