Is the Big Buddha crowded around the CNY holiday? Trying to pick the best (i.e. least crowded) nice day to go. Any tips? Thanks.

I agree with Cara.

And buy return tickets instead of single journey, unless you prefer to take the bus going back. The last cable car departs around 6pm. Best to leave before 4pm. The queue going back to Tung Chung can also be a nightmare.

If you REALLY have to go during the CNY, I suggest going on Saturday, and get there before 10am

Thanks very much to the two of you.

Cara, am I correct in thinking you recently had your baby??! If so, congrats!

Saikunga - Thanks. I was hoping that that may be the case. What is technically the 'first' day of the CNY holidays?

We went on a non-holiday Saturday morning, and waited about 10 minutes for the cable car.

Besides the yummy veggie food that has always been there, in the 'new tourist village' that you walk through from the cable car to the buddha, there is a great ice cream shop :)

Yeah Cara!

Thanks crj, and for the food tips too. ;)

Maybe Wednesday would be a good day to go. We've been here for two years and still have to get to the Buddha!

RiceT - usually on the first day of the CNY, but since it falls on a sunday this year, the public holiday begins on saturday to make up for the loss of day off.

Thanks to sylvia. Question, if Sunday is the first day of the CNY, why do the fireworks take place on Monday night? Is there a significance to this day after?

Saturday is NOT the first day of CNY.

It is the eve of CNY. Normally this would not be a public holiday but, to keep the business bosses who run this city happy, it was made one.

Any Chinese calender, with Chinese dates, will confirm this.

As people visit family on the first day, it is not really an appropriate day to have the fireworks.

Don't forget there are many mainland Chinese are coming to Hong Kong. They have a long holiday and being rich, so they would take this holiday to travel wherever, such as HK or Japan. So I don't think optimistically the 1st day will be better than other holiday!

Perhaps also wait for a day that is reasonably clear, if you want to enjoy the view that is...

Cheers, Claire - really appreciate your explanation on it all too. Very clear now and learned a tiny bit about tradition along the way.

I would avoid it this week, apart from the fact that the visibility is so low so you won't get the full impact of the cable car ride. But also many, many tour groups come from the mainland this week, and most of them include The Big Buddha, Disney and Ocean Park. I went to Ocean park last CNY, never again, it was awful, they were getting nearly 1/2 million visitors a day. I'd suggest make the most of the days off, relax at home, invite friends over for a barbie, catch up on some dvds you haven't had a chance to watch.

Not just at Big Buddha, Disney and O Park, but also Sasa (cosmetic retailers), Louis Vuitton, MTR, Wong Tai Sin Temple...etc etc. Just found that there are so many many mainland Chinese around you wherever! Better stay home during this holiday!!

Ha ha! Hi Cara and everyone - Nope, we heeded your words (Cara's 'you would be completely insane' would pop into my mind everytime I thought about maybe going :) this weekend and we did other things, including BBQ out in Sai Kung, where remarkably, there weren't many people. It was reaaaaaaaalllly nice. Thanks for your expertise everyone.

(Cara, not to hijack my own post but...how's that woman with the twins that you were helping out months ago? Doing ok? Does she need anything more? We're relocating and may have a few things to share. Did she have boys only? Feel free to PM me if it's better to reply there.)
