Ask an Xpat -- Property. Where did it go?

ORIGINAL POST

I've not logged into AsiaXpat for awhile and as always, things change in a relatively short span of time. What happened to Ask an Xpat -- Property? This was the best part of AsiaXpat in that I learned so much about housing in all parts of HK. "Find a Home" doesn't work for me because I'm not directly looking for a home. I just like to keep up with HK's property chatter.

We are merging some of the forums as we move to a new design... Property questions are now in the Practical forum

I found it invaluable as well. Miss it now.

What's even unfortunate is that all the old threads which I think are very helpful have been deleted together with the posts in Career/Visa section.

Now people have to start asking again, and wait for useful relies rather than check out the previous threads..

Ed, any way you guys can incorporate the old threads back into Practical?

I would also like to see Property Chat come back under its own category, it's confusing having to negotiate your way through messages about other subjects. Ed, please would you consider it?

We prefer not to reactivate it - we have too many forums and property would fall under 'questions abou moving to or living in HK'

I will get our guys to move the property threads into this forum so that you can still be able to search and access that content - thanks for the suggestion

Property is an immensely popular forum (this is Hong Kong!!) and should not be merged with Practical forum, unless you give the Practical forum sub-categories, such as Property. The Property forum is a stand alone topic worthy of its own forum. Throw pillow cushions, Dog Kennels, Piano Tuner and How much $$$$$ are you paid? belong in Practical. Property is a forum in and of itself.

I also agree ... I'd have thought that it would be far more useful for Property to have its own forum. Playgroups I'd have thought could easily be included in the Moms & Dads forum, or Book Chat & Movie Reviews to come under the same forum ... And I can't believe that Recipes warrants its own forum, but Property doesn't?? Seems strange to me, but I guess Ed knows best.

Agree, bring back the property forum. Sapphire is right with merging playgroups, and books and movies.

After looking at "Playgroups", "Recipes", "Book Chat" to name a few -- no one has posted a comment in any of these forums in days. You can actually see comments from several months ago on the first page. Why not merge these forums with "Practical" instead of the very popular "Property", which is such an active subject here in HK? The decision to merge "Property" with "Practical" could not have possibly been generated from the Hong Kong office. This decision must have come from their head office in Outer Mongolia, where there is no property market. We, however, have Ed representing the HK office. I am sure he understands how important the "Property" forum is for Hongkongers. Please help us, Ed, get this forum back.

Ed,

Why don't you advise/ask the posters who frequent your site if it would be a good idea to get rid of a certain forum before actually doing it? I too looked at the property site very often and would also like it put back. PLEASE?!?!

I feel the same. That was one forum that didn't seem to fit anywhere else. The Discovery Bay site stays inactive for days and could easily merge into other categories. There are 3 categories for parenting, with playgroups, Moms & Dads and pregnancy/fertility. I realise these are all valid subjects and used frequently but could pregnancy not merge with medical? Recipes with restaurants? The property site was really popular and it seems strange to move it, was there some other issue?

Yes, I agree. The Property forum is one of the more popular and useful sections here, and should thus have a standalone link. Please, Ed, consider.

The Practical forum, meanwhile, is beginning to get crowded with too many topics -- it's just so hard to look for the topic you're actually looking for.

The Practical forum is beginning to get very impractical. It's like having a forum category titled "anything under the sun".
