i've had recently bought a car, 1 month ago, and we actually over calculated.

I spend about $1000 on petrol a month, i save $1000 each month for servicing, parking and toll costs, fully comprehensive insurance ($4500 total with 50% NCB) plus inital buying costs.

After not having a car for myself (hubby has company car) for 10 years it has made a huge difference to me.

My suggestion is take a taxi. It will be cheaper than using a private car especially if you only use it to go to work and back.

If you live far from your employment, you can normally negotiate a better price if you use the taxi daily.

Parking in HK is a nightmare. If you use a taxi you get dropped off outside the door, if you drive you need to go around in circles looking for the elusive car park.

Parking costs can be reduced of course by shopping in the right shops and restaurants etc, but again you need to line up to get your receipts stamped, I just go to the taxi rank and away we go.

We did the maths a long time ago and a taxi worked out cheaper, no headaches in traffic and I can arrive at work at the same time or quicker than those with cars.

This has been discussed many times previously. Do a search and you will find many pages giving you some ideas on the costs.

Exactly, Saikunga. My partner works at Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate and although his company runs shuttle buses, none of them are any good for where we live so he simply has to have a car to get to and from the office and meetings. And when we want to buy odds and sods at, say, Ap Lei Chau or from IKEA then it's much easier to do it by car.

If your vehicle is in good shape, & reasonably fuel efficient, it works out cheaper owning a car than using taxi's. A return trip to the airport only costs me $180HKD, it would be over $600HKD by cab. I run a turbo diesel 7 seater Isuzu Trooper 4WD, runs like a Seiko and very frugal.

Like what was discussed above, a car is only as expensive or as cheap as you allow it to be.

Living out in the NT, for us, a car is exponentially cheaper than any other form of family transport, having the freedom and instant convienance, there is no debate.

For those who live on the island with abundant close proximity public transport, I don't doubt that situation would be cheaper, especially for short distances.

The original poster may have a village house in the NT, no onsite parking costs to consider, parking in the NT, is between $10 - $20hkd per hour, sometimes its free if you spend $200 for groceries if your supermarket has a deal, making it even cheaper for a family.

A car out here, is very much the practical way to go.

The above won't apply, if you buy fuel guzzling 6, 8 or 12 cyl petrol sports cars, especially big heavy luxury cars, ie Rolls Royces and S class Mercs.

Flyhigh - yes NCB is no claims bonus. I have a 2 year old Mini (admittedly second car) and i am amzed at how fuel efficient it is. drive to and from work everyday and i only fill up once every 10-12 days. Very happy!
