When our building was sold and we had new owners, we refused to sign the new lease until we had confirmation in writing by the new owners that they were responsible for the refunding of our deposit, etc.....this they did with very little hassle

You should have received a letter from your new landlord's solicitor stating that your deposit has been transferred from your old landlord to your new landlord. You should contact your new landlord.
