How much does it cost - roughly

We are considering to move from HK back to Brisbane, Australia.

Can someone give me some idea how much I can expect to pay for a removalist to pack up and move everything back to Aus? I realise that it depends on a number of things but there must be a rough price for 2 bedroom apartment.

I am starting to determine would it be better to buy everything new (furniture/appliances) or pay someone to bring it to Aus.

If we move everything then I am moving old appliances and obviously buying new I will have an Aus guarantee and everything is the latest model. Furniture I need to think about the cost of moving and the cost of new.

If I get a quote from a company and then change the number of boxes or decide not to bring something, then I need to get a new quote, hence the request for a rough idea now without numerous quotes.

So if anyone has some ideas and experience-friends etc of moving back to Aus, do you know what they did and how much?

Please do mention company names as Ed will delete my post so just keep it generic - Thank you

As Mobile.F says, doing the packing etc yourself is the cheapest way, but you have to consider how much extra work you will be doing yourself if you don't use a moving company. When we moved recently from one flat to another, it took 5 guys a whole day to pack up our stuff at one end and unpack it at the other end. And that was just packing it for a short move, not to go on a shipping container which would need better/more secure packing. Then you need to think about who is going to do the heavy lifting at both ends. Insurance is an extra cost whether you do it yourself or not, but I'd rather have my valuables packed by someone who knows what they are doing. And then there's the paperwork handling, which can be time consuming and stressful. So you may save money but it costs more in other ways.

Sorry that I can't help you with actual costs. Some of the firms that advertise in HK magazine may be able to give you some rough quotes.

not going to get into the cost wise of moving, however, i would take it all back with you.

sure, if something breaks in 6 months... you'll have to buy new but thats in 6 months.

I've recently just fitted out my holiday house in qld, and was suprised at just how much it cost me... meaning alot more than I was expecting.

full fitout, beds, dining/lounge/kitchen/laundry... etc.

aus definitely aint cheap no more, no more, no more, no more......

There has been a lot of good advice - please keep it coming :)

I don't mind spending the money, I just don't want to waste it. This means weighing up the costs of removals vs purchasing new. (our old is 5 years+)

Thanks to Conordec for your feedback. I've had some junk mail sent over with furniture prices etc and yes it is expensive, but is it expensive to move??

My line of thinking is, if we move everything, will it suit our new house? This is why I am thinking of just sending the basics and replacing the furniture and some of the appliances with new.

Mobile Fid has some good advice but this idea will need a lot of consideration.

Thanks everybody, other ideas will be welcomed.

What about just sending small stuff back to Aus? not hiring a shipping container. just want to send some suitcases back.

Mobile.F, I quite take your point. It's just a matter of preference. Some people, like you, are willing to spend extra time in order to save money, and are obviously successful in doing things that way. It's great to know that its feasible to do it this way.

Myself, I find the moving process extremely stressful as it is, and the more I can get the professionals to do the better, so I'm willing to pay for that. Then there is always the question of whether you will have the time to spend packing stuff yourself - some people will, some (like me) are unlikely to.

Just a side question - how much does a shipping container hold in cubic metres? What happens to the extra space if you don't fill it all? I know when we came over we brought lots of books and stuff but almost no furniture, so we came nowhere near filling a container.

Packing and coordinating everything yourself requires alot of work, more than the typical expat would want. That's why most people hire removalists. hkkm, you can share a container with other removalist customers if you don't fill one yourself. It's cheaper that way.

I agree it is less stress to have someone else pack and prepare our stuff for relocation, but as said,

What does it cost to send to Aus or is it cheaper to buy new furniture and appliances when we arrive?
