Does anyone know the steps required to start a non-profit organization?

Get a name and go registered with the police at the local ststion. You get forms and things.
All the police wants to know is that you are not a subversive group, however that is defined, and you have no criminal links.
Your accountant should know the rest, if you take in any kind of fees or even pass on charges back to members you have to submit accounts to the Inland Revenue. The rules are on the gov website. Go to how to form LTD Company and the bit on non-profit qualification for non-profit status is there somewhere.
I was told by one accounting firm that they had to charge me more for being non-profit as there is more work to do. Came to the same amount as LTD. Needless to say I ignored them.

This requirement appears to be a remnant of the days when the words "societies" and "associations" had other connotations in HK. Triad links etc.
I was somewhat surprised at this when I found out and the reasons behind it was subsequently explained to me by a mate teaching Criminal Justice at HKU.
