what to do now with the new travel security measures?

As of March 21st the cabin luggage for all flights departing HK is limited to 100 ml bottles of fluids!

They do say exceptions for Baby's food or diet...etc.

Can anyone share their experience when travelling to UK when they implemented this in the summer last year?

I need to bring a thermos (about 500 ml) of hot water, and 1 L of cool water in a rubbermaid bottle. I guess baby jar foods is ok ?

Thanks for any information. Getting nervous about the trip with babies in April.

Suggestion:

Call up the airlines customer service to request for special needs of a baby, inclusive of boarding assistance to bring aboard your above baby food/water due to the airport guidelines.

I called Cathay Pacific today, talked to reservations, and customer servce...etc.

Conclusion is they are going to be very strict with this policy. No liquids in one bottle more than 100ml. Doesn't matter we need it for formula or baby needs it... they said we have to use the water that they serve on board, but if hot water, it's from the tap, not fully boiled, just "hot"... what they use to make coffee and tea.

Anyone can share their experience from travelling from airports that already implement this policy last year? What did other mothers do travelling with babies?

singapore is planning to implement the same policy soon.

when we left heathrow last sept, the customs officer took random samples of milk powder (we had put the powder with the right portions in the travel container) and asked my hubby to taste it in front of him. he also had to pour some water out of the thermos flask to drink.

not sure if you can just take a gamble and be prepared to taste the water and milk in front of the custome officer before they'll let you take it onboard...

how old are you little ones - if above one, maybe there is time to introduce some cow's milk which might make things easier that the plane can provide?

my aunt says when she travelled with her kids in the past, her kids drank formula made out of water provided by cabin crew, no problems.

good luck, it's hard enough as it is travelling with little ones....especially if you tend to pack as much as piossible on board like i like to do!!

Katetam, How old is your baby? DO you still need to boil water for him/her. I would just use room temperature bottled water for my son when he was old enough (he'd drink it at room temp too), it made life much easier.

My baby is 15 months, but I always made warm milk for them. They won't drink (they would stop) when the milk is less than hot. I know this is learned... I will try to make him drink less hot. However, the milk powder doesn't seem to dissolve very well in room temp water....

Anyways, I called the Civil Aviation department as instructed by Cathay pacific.

This is what they told me. If I mix the formula FIRST (so you see it's milk), into the thermos. And, they see you holding a baby/infant... then you can take the more than 100ml liquid on board as carry on.

Of course one can take the risk of drinking the water on board... but I hate to take this risk and have to worry if he might have tummy problems for the next 10 days during the trip.

Also, I have read too many articles about how unsafe water (boiled or not) is from airplane.

It's a good thing it's a short flight (5 hours)... can't imagine what to do on a long haul flight.

Kate,

At 15 months he could use Evian or what ever bottled water they have on the plane. The cabin crew will warm the milk for you, they do it for me all the time.

Good Luck

I've used Evian etc before - my baby will drink room temperature milk but won't drink it icy cold so remember to ask for a few bottles as soon as you get on the plane so that they have a chance to warm to room temperature - otherwise use the cold water, mix in the powder, then ask the crew to warm the bottle - I've done this a lot before - they will either bring it back to you or will give you a cup of hot water for you to pop the bottle into and sort out yourself.

I wouldn't bother worrying about it, especially when the flight is only 5 hours.

Katetam, could you use the ready made formula cartons from Bumps to Babes? They are 200ml each and most likely a different brand to what you are used to, but at least you know that the powder is properly dissolved and you do not have to gamble with the safety of airplane water. They can always heat them up for you, and you know that the milk will be 'fresh'.

Thanks everyone for advice.

So, can anyone share the experience with me WHEN you can just have the baby drink straight from bottled water without boiling? I never did that... even for my daughter, I boiled her bottled water until she was 2 years old.

Thanks.
