You can send send back ANY car not just " providing it was a low volume import by the original manufacturer or it was a model that was never imported by the brand." And yes, you must have owned and registered it for 12 months.
"Cars that are eligible are all AMG performance Mercs, most Porsches, all Ferrari's, all Lamborghini's, all Maserati's, V8 & V12 Merc convertables, Aston Martin's, Rolls Royce's, Bentley's, TVR's, pre 1997 Mini's, V8 & V12, M3 BMW's, any car that less than 100 cars per model year were ever imported by that brand." NOT TRUE. This only applies to special enthusist class of imports not personal.

You can assume I have no experience. FYI, I am currently holding 2 import permits for a Subaru and a R129 SL. We have owned and used them both here for 12 months.
Go and have another look at DOTARS mate. You can import anything under personal import as long as you have owned it for 12 months overseas.
I don't know where you get your info from. The only way you will get a '96 Mercedes SL into OZ is under personal import. Same goes to V8 & V12, M3 BMW's as they were offically imported into Aus by the manufacturer/distubutor.
Ferrai's and Lambo's were imported by the distubutor as low volumn import for ADR reasons. And yes, you can send them back anytime, but they must get full ADR to become registable.

Sorry to assume that Marrypoppins ask that "Has anyone taken their car back to Oz and know the cost involved." I would have thought that "back" to Oz would implied he/she is an Aussie!
Her question was the cost not what.
Let me try to answer the original question. Shipping would be HK$15,000 roll on roll off, add approx HK$5k for a container (includes local paperwork and loading it on to the boat).
Once it lands Aus custom clearence/brokage(Aud$300) then plus 10% import duty(base cost of the car) and 10% GST(base cost + shipping). Then compliance(Aud$500-$1000), RWC(Aud$300 if the cars in good condition), Stamp duty(depending on state X% of total cost of the vehicle) and Rego.
