Can baby eat almost anything after one?

We turn one next Sat...yeahhhhhh!!

He's been very good on solids but I want to introduce and integrate him into our family meals. Two questions:

1) Do we still need to stick to a new ingredient per day rule for allergies?

2) Can they take:

- pork?

- salmon and other types of fish. so far he has only had tinned tuna (for his fav tuna pasta) and threadfin (a fish that locals like to introduce as first fish to babies)

- all types of pasteurised cheeses (is feta ok)

- honey

- duck

- regular yoghurt (he HATES natural yoghurt and petit miam is quite expensive for the portion and daily consumption)

not that i plan to feed him all the above everyday but just curious and that i won't have to worry if he wants to have a little bite of what we're having when we are out!

thanks!

My daughter would eat what ever was on my plate from 1 year old and had even developed a taste for black olives and lemon at 9 months! She's still a fantastic eater with sense of adventure. Go for it!

I had the same experience with @@, by not limiting what my son could eat at age 1, he developed this gourmet taste and is pretty much up to the adventure of discovering new tastes. He is 3 years old now and loves different kinds of cheese, yoghurt and beat this... SALMON sashimi!

if there have been no problems with food reaction/allergies thus far, Wheelymate, I wouldn't be too worried giving him anything under the sun. Probably with the exception of peanuts / nuts, as my bub's allergist told us nut allergy may be late-onset and develop after child turns 3. it is also a choking hazard.

Wow, almost one year!

We have introduced many things but no red meat, nuts (allergy in the family), and we still try to stick to healthy things like whole grains rather than white and bleached. We also avoid salt and sugar and most processed foods.

My theory is, we can 'impose' healthy foods for about 3 years, then after that with school friends, etc... it is going to get harder - but at least we can start this human being off with a good healthy start.

thanks mums...

the only reaction he's had is to kiwis - he would puke it out after he's had his morning nap if i fed that for breakfast. too acidic i think!

crj, yes, almost one year, amazing! feels like i've aged 10 years though...LOL

Apparently kiwi allergies are not uncommon in babies/toddlers. Also, honey has been known to cause allergies in under 3s, so we introduced virtually everything except these and nuts after their first birthdays.

WM -

our daughter eats what we do now. She's heading towards 13 months, and she just loves whatever we're having. I prepare the same meal as ours - but I try to lighten whatever seasoning she is having and make it more bland, and also I give her with her Korean soup a whole grain rice mix (instead of white rice) that has beans, sweet brown rice, brown rice, barley and millet all cooked in the pressure cooker today. SO she eats that and she likes it.

I'm with CRJ - if she can take healthier now - then I'm giving it to her. It's having a pretty good effect on her older sister who will often "Try" what her younger sister is having and eat a few bites of some random health concoction I've got going on any given day.

Today #2 discovered the seasoned seaweed (laver - or in korean kkim.) She loved it! But it's salty ! I made little "rice balls" with bits of the seaweed on top and she ate that. Then in her bone soup I dropped a broccoli food cube and she slurped it up.

she's eating yogurt with a spoon, although it's pretty hit and miss... (more miss actually.)

thanks guys!

mrsl- have not determined if it's an allergy or just too acidic first thing in the morning! but he has had no problems with other foods so i definitely noticed it when he threw up the kiwis right after his am nap if i had fed it for brekkie. not if i fed it during lunch though...hmmmm

hkcc: yeah, we try to do healthy too, i know he's going to have his fair share of junk when he's older. i guess it's good that i don't use too much seasoning in the 1st place - usually little or no salt.

it's so funny you know...my mum used to moan at me about trying so hard to be different when it comes to cooking baby's food - why not cook just chinese congee and all. but after seeing how well my kid is thriving, she's actually asking me for recipes so that she can cook for my newborn nephew in the future! :)

Congratulations on your babies first birthday !

It is a good idea to try and integrate your babies meals into the familys meals however ,

It would be still a good idea to introduce new foods one at a time just so if there is a problem you can quickly

identify the offending food .

Honey can now be given to your baby..

Pork is an excellent source of protein as is Salmon Duck might be a little too strong tasting for the baby as yet and can also be quite fatty so I would be inclined to leave this for a while longer. Make sure that you buy good quality cuts of these meats though.

I would still advise great caution with nuts in general especially Peanuts as I am sure you are aware are highly allergenic .

well after my daughter has eaten everything well with no problem, today she threw up after going to bed. ALL OVER, so much I was really shocked. I sat after we washed her and put her back to sleep trying to figure out what made her throw up. (I dissected the vomit on the sheets...what mothers will do.)

her appetite was off all day, but our helper tries really hard to get her to finish ALL of her food -today she was yelling throughout her whole dinner (I was teaching but could still hear her) and my helper said she mostly just had the bone soup.

ugh...

she could be coming down with something.

mine's caught something from his regular playmate - played on thurs, kid fell ill on fri, then my kid on sat evening. his fever was 104 on sunday and even though he is better today, he is surviving on yoghurt, fruit and milk.

wheelymate, my son was a very good eater till his first birthday. The very next day after his bday party, he came down with an ear infection and with that, his appepite went out of the window. Even after he recovered (which was pretty quick), he refused to eat anything at all (and with his intake of formula also coming down, I was petrified that he would suffer from malnutrition). Anyway, after that phase-which lasted 3 (long) months-he began eating almost all fruits (simply loves them), wholewheat bread, brown rice, fish, poultry (not fond of pork/beef/lamb), cheese, regular fruit yogurt (does not like homemade yogurt), some vegetables/pulses and many rice/lentils based dishes. I did not introduce nuts (allergy/choking hazard) till he was 2 years old. Basically no added sugar and little/no salt.

Agree with crj, there is going to be a stage when they become assertive and start demanding unhealthy foods (in our case, the turning point was 2 years). So, make those healthy choices for them while you still can.

hkchoichoi, my son has random episodes of vomiting - each episode lasts just 2-3 min and the next episode could be anywhere between 1 to 4 weeks . I have tried taking stock of what he may have eaten that particular day, but have not come up with the offending food (if that is the reason), so far.

thanks addis.

The random vomiting episode - I don't know. She does seem a bit off today and I let her take the lead in her food. My older one NEVER vomited as a baby, and only once as a toddler so the vomit took me by surprise, to say in the least. I thought it might have been the tuna salad I tried out on her and today only gave her very well cooked foods, and nothing cold and she did fine. She did seem a bit feverish and had a bit of a runny nose so maybe she's just coming down with something, who knows?

Wow Wheelymate, turning one - congrats - we've just hit 13 months here.

Anyway, now she's 1 I just give her pretty much everything we eat - though of course we're not always healthy so some things she gets an alternative and if we're out and about I maybe have some healthy snacks with us. But usually hubby and I pick foods we know she'll eat if we're dining out, and TBH we eat pretty healthily at home anyway.

On your list we've done pretty much everything now and I'd give her any of them except regular yoghurt - but that's cos I find them too sweet too.

Everything in moderation, and a LITTLE bit of what they like won't hurt them I figure!!

Have a great day on saturday!

hi spicegal,

congrats to you too!

yeah, i've decided as long as it's not too radical or a very common allergen (like nuts), a little taste should be ok.

i have to say hubby and i eat much healthy these days because of baby - cooking and the types of foods we buy.....but more expensive too!!
