Hi
My childern have a permanent ID card (all born in HK and lived for over 7 years here but not of "Chinese origin " ) and I understand when they reach 21 years they will need to apply in thier own right for a perm ID card.
To apply they will have to show you have lived continuosly for the 7 years prior to applying.
Since they have gone overseas to study at university I guess they will loose the right - has anyone encountered this with their children ?
Seem very unfair to me !

One thing tangential to your question, which you/your kids might want to know before they get a nasty surprise... as one of our friends just did.
Let's say you are British and your kids are born in HK. They will be British too. So far so good. But their kids (so your grandkids) will NOT be British if they are also born here, as that nationality passes down only one generation to those born overseas. So what nationality will your grandkids be? Well, not HK - because they are not ethnically Chinese (a requirement, apparently, irrespective of residence status). And not British. So they are probably stateless. They can get a "certificate of identity", but no passport.
So beware!
